1. Are drug and alcohol tests part of the pre-employment process?

The City of Norwalk conducts pre-employment drug tests for all full-time employees.

2. Are medical examinations required?

All sworn police and fire personnel and certain positions in public works require post offer medical examinations.

3. Does the City of Norwalk conduct pre-employment criminal background checks?

Applicants under serious consideration for employment, or those who have been extended a contingent job offer, will undergo a pre-employment, criminal background check. The nature and scope of the background check is a function of the position.

4. Will my references be checked?

During the pre-employment process, you will submit names and numbers of two (2) professional references; preferably a supervisor for the Personnel Department to contact regarding your work performance.

5. How long is the pre-employment process?

The background check can take 2-3 weeks. In certain instance applicants will be hired contingent upon successful completion of the background examination.
