Ceremonies are scheduled to mark completion of work to make Norwalk’s
Shea-McGrath Memorial accessible to persons with disabilities.

Mayor Richard Moccia will preside over the ceremony. In welcoming completion of the project Mayor Moccia said, “Making the Shea McGrath Memorial accessible to those for whom it means so much, especially Veterans and the elderly, has been a priority of our compliance initiative. Now all citizens may visit the memorial without stairs and pay their respects whenever they want.”

The Shea-McGrath Memorial honors Norwalk’s Medal of Honor Recipients Daniel Shea and John McGrath and all Norwalkers who gave their lives in defense of the country. John McGrath, a member of the 10th Mountain Division, was Norwalk’s first posthumous recipient of the Medal of Honor, citing his valor in the Italian campaign during World War II. Daniel Shea was a medic who was honored for his bravery in caring for his fellow soldiers on the fields of strife during the Viet Nam War.

Completion of the project is in keeping with the City of Norwalk initiative to implement American for Disability Act Compliance and Transition Plan. Work to make the Shea McGrath Memorial accessible follows similar projects that have been completed at other Norwalk recreational facilities including Veterans Park, Fodor Farm and Shady Beach.
