The City of Norwalk and the Norwalk Health Department are proud to work with the American Cancer Society (ACS) in its fight against cancer. Now, community members in Norwalk and surrounding areas can join the fight, as well, by enrolling in the ACS’s new research study, Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3).
CPS-3 will follow a diverse sample of people over the course of 20 to 30 years to learn how lifestyle choices impact the likelihood of developing cancer. This is the only long-term study of its kind enrolling in the United States today, and anyone between the ages of 30 and 65 who has never been diagnosed with cancer can enroll.
“With its regional headquarters located in Norwalk, the American Cancer Society offers a point of great pride for all our citizens,” said Mayor Richard C. Moccia. “By participating in CPS-3, our residents not only can demonstrate their thanks to an important neighbor, but contribute meaningfully to the long term understanding of cancer.”
Enrollment appointments are available at the Health Department (137 East Avenue, Norwalk), on Thursday, June 13, from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm.
According to the ACS, appointments can be made at other nearby locations including the Society’s Regional Center at 38 Richards Avenue, on Wednesday, June 19, from 3:00 pm – 6:30 pm; the New Canaan YMCA at 564 South Avenue on Tuesday, June 18 from 8:00 am - 11:30 am; the Stamford Government Center at 888 Washington Blvd on Tuesday, June 18 from 12:00 pm – 3:30 pm; Stamford Hospital at 30 Shelburne Rd on Thursday, June 20 from 4:00 pm – 7:30 pm and the Tully Health Center at 32 Strawberry Hill Court on Friday, June 21 from 2:00 pm – 5:30 pm.
“The CPS-3 study provides us with an opportunity to contribute to research aimed at determining the effects lifestyles play in the development of cancer,” said Norwalk Director of Health Tim Callahan. “We may or may not benefit from the findings and subsequent breakthroughs in cancer prevention; however, generations to come will. The simple act of sharing information results in a powerful and positive contribution to society.”
Participating is easy:
1. Make an appointment to enroll by visiting cancer.org/cps3NE or by calling (888) 604-5888.2. Read and sign an informed consent form.
3. Complete a survey packet, which will ask for detailed information on lifestyle, behavioral, and other factors related to your health. This step should take about 45-60 minutes and can be done at home.4. Come to the Health Department or another enrollment site on your appointment date, where you will be asked a few more questions, measured for waist circumference, and asked to give a small blood sample (similar to that given at a doctor’s visit) drawn by a trained, certified phlebotomist. This appointment should last about 20-30 minutes.
5. Complete a mailed survey every few years over the next 20-30 years.
All personal information and any individual results of blood analyses that may be performed will be kept strictly confidential by CPS-3 research staff. There is no cost to you to participate.
