Norwalk Kicks off Free Volunteer Tax Assistance Program in Several Community Locations

(Norwalk, Conn.) Today, Wednesday, January 31, 2024, the City of Norwalk announced that it has teamed up with SimplifyCT and kicked off its annual no-cost, full-service Volunteer Tax Assistance Program. Through IRS-certified volunteers, Norwalk is offering in-person and virtual tax return preparation services at several locations in Norwalk through April 15, 2024. These services are being offered in English and Spanish on Tuesdays through Saturdays. This program is the nation’s largest, free, volunteer-run tax assistance service and is available to all individuals regardless of income or age. 

“The City of Norwalk is pleased to partner with IRS-Certified volunteers who have been serving our community for years,” said Mayor Rilling. “This tax assistance service is free and available to anyone in the community who needs help filing and preparing their tax returns.”

Below is SimplifyCT’s weekly in-person schedule in Norwalk. Appointments are required and can be made by calling the phone numbers below.

  • Tuesdays from 1:30 pm – 7:00 pm

  • Fridays from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

    • You can make an appointment by calling 203-847-3115  
  • Saturdays from 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm  
    • Norwalk Library, 1 Belden Avenue and South Norwalk Library, 10 Washington Street
    • You can make an appointment by calling 203-899-2780 for the Norwalk Library and 203-899-2790 for the South Norwalk Library.

Before beginning the process online or in person, taxpayers must have the following information available:

Identity Documentation

  • A government issued photo ID.
  • Social Security or ITIN numbers for each taxpayer and dependent.
  • Bank account/routing numbers (blank check preferable) if expecting a refund.

All 2023 income report forms received

  • SSA1099 if you were paid Social Security benefits. 
  • W-2(s) from your employer(s).
  • W-2G from gambling winnings.
  • 1099G from unemployment compensation payments. 
  • 1099s: Bank interest, stock dividends, retirement distributions, broker statements.

Other Important Documents

  • If itemizing deductions, receipts for expenses such as taxes paid (real estate, vehicle) and charitable contributions, and verification of the original purchase price of sold assets (home, stocks).
  • Form 1095-A if health insurance was from the Access Health Connecticut Marketplace.
  • Preferably, for reference, a copy of last year’s (TY 2021) return.
