Norwalk Kicks off Free Volunteer Tax Assistance Program in Several Community Locations

(Norwalk, Conn.) Today, January 27, 2023, the City of Norwalk announced that it has teamed up with SimplifyCT and kicked off its annual no-cost, full-service AARP/VITA/IRS Volunteer Tax Assistance Program. Through IRS-certified volunteers, Norwalk is now offering in-person and virtual tax return preparation services at several locations, Tuesdays through Saturdays through April 18, 2023. These services are being offered in English and Spanish.

“The City of Norwalk is pleased to partner with VITA IRS-Certified volunteers who have been serving our community for years,” said Mayor Rilling. “This valuable, free service is available to anyone in the community who needs help filing and preparing their tax returns. All someone has to do to get support filing their 2022 taxes is call to make an appointment and bring the proper paperwork.” 

Below is SimplifyCT’s weekly in-person schedule in Norwalk. Appointments are required and can be made by calling the following phone numbers below.

Before starting either the on-site or virtual filings, taxpayers must have the following types of information available:

Identity Documentation

  • Government Issued Photo ID.
  • Social Security or ITIN numbers for all taxpayers and dependents.
  • Bank account/routing numbers (blank check preferable), if expecting a refund.
      

All 2022 income report forms received

  • SSA1099 if you were paid Social Security benefits. 
  •  W-2(s) from your employer(s).
  • W-2G from gambling winnings.
  • 1099G from unemployment compensation payments. 
  • 1099s: Bank interest, stock dividends, retirement distributions, broker statements.

Other Important Documents

  • If itemizing deductions, receipts for expenses such as taxes paid (real estate, vehicle) and charitable contributions, and verification of the original purchase price of sold assets (home, stocks).
  • Form 1095-A if health insurance was from the Access Health Connecticut Marketplace.
  • Preferably, for reference, A copy of last year’s (TY 2021) return. 

All virtual tax preparation and filing are available through the same IRS-certified counselors. Anyone interested can access these services by visiting https://simplifyct.org or calling (860) 590-8910 for more information.

This program is the nation’s largest, free volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service and is available to all individual filers regardless of income or age.
