Norwalk Offers Safety Tips for Fireworks and Grilling Ahead of the Fourth of July Holiday Weekend

(Norwalk, Conn.) Today, July 1, 2022, the City of Norwalk offers fireworks and grilling safety tips ahead of the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Fireworks can be dangerous and the City asks residents to please leave them to the professionals. The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public firework show directed by professionals. On Sunday, July 3, at 7:30 PM, the City of Norwalk will be presenting Fireworks at Calf Pasture Beach in honor of Independence Day. You can find more information about the event, here

Fireworks Safety Tips

If you are setting fireworks off at home, please follow these safety steps:

  1. Follow the instructions on the packaging.
  2. Keep fireworks out of the hands of small children.
  3. Don't throw or point a firework toward any people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials.
  4. Make sure the person lighting fireworks wears eye protection.
  5. Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and animals.
  6. Keep a supply of water close by as a precaution.
  7. Light one firework at a time and never attempt to relight "a dud."

Grilling Safety

If you are going to grill, please follow these safety steps:

  1. Grill outdoors rather than indoors.
  2. Keep the grill out in the open, away from the house and anything that could catch fire, such as the deck, tree branches, etc.
  3. Don't leave the grill unattended.
  4. After coals have been ignited, don't add charcoal starter fluid.
  5. Use long-handled tools when operating the grill.
  6. Make sure everyone, including pets and children, stays away from an active grill.
  7. Keep perishable foods in a cooler with plenty of ice instead of out in the hot sun.
