On Thursday, March 25, 2021, Norwalk Fire Chief Gino Gatto and Norwalk Mayor Harry W. Rilling announced that the Norwalk Fire Department launched the recruitment period and testing process for entry level firefighters. The announcement was made at a special press conference at Norwalk Fire Headquarters with members of the Norwalk Fire Commission, local clergy, and community leaders.
“We invite men and women to join the rich tradition of our Fire Department, and the nearly 140 firefighters who work every day to serve and protect our City and its residents,” Chief Gatto said. “Being a Norwalk Firefighter is a challenging job, but it is equally rewarding.”
The City is encouraging Norwalk residents to submit an application. Recruitment efforts will be ongoing through local nonprofits, faith-based groups, workforce programs, and traditional and digital media. There are currently 12 openings which the Department hopes to fill through this testing process.
“I encourage our residents who are interested in becoming a firefighter to submit their application. We will be out there recruiting to let the public know this opportunity is available, and we are counting on our community partners to help spread the word,” said Mayor Rilling, who is also a Fire Commissioner. “This is a competitive field, and I really want to see us hire more residents and increase our diversity within the Department. This recruitment effort will help us reach the community.”
Firefighter applications will be accepted until May 10 through FirefighterApp at https://bit.ly/NorwalkFD2021App. The written portion of the fire examination will take place on Saturday, May 22. There is a $25 nonrefundable registration fee.
The starting salary is $65,476. Candidates must be at least 18 years old on the date of the written test. The Fire Department offers opportunities for specialized training and advancement.
The Norwalk Fire Department will be hosting an informational session in April via Zoom for Norwalk residents that will provide an overview of the application process, answer questions and give more information about the Fire Department and working in Norwalk. More details will be announced soon.
