[ARCHIVED] Dog license renewals due in June

Last year, the City of Norwalk issued nearly 2,700 dog licenses. All of these licenses must be renewed for 2020, and any new dogs over six months of age or currently unlicensed must also register. Dog licenses will be available on Monday, June 1, 2020. All currently registered dog owners will be receiving renewal notices in the mail.

With City Hall currently closed to the public, the Town Clerk’s Office is accepting renewals through the mail. Residents are asked to include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for return. Renewal requests can also be dropped off at the walk-up window at City Hall. The Town Clerk’s office will process and mail licenses to residents.

Per Connecticut State Statute 22-349, all dogs must be licensed with the City. Owners of unlicensed dogs could be subject to a $75 fine.

Dog licenses are valid for one year (July 1, 2020 - June 30, 2021) and cost $8 for neutered/spayed dogs and $19 for unneutered/unspayed dogs. In July, the fees increase by $1, and each month thereafter, another $1 is added to the original fee. If expired, a current rabies certificate signed by a veterinarian must be presented to the office to comply with state law. If a dog has not been registered before, a neutering or spaying certificate must also be given when registering.

Members of the public are reminded that due to the COVID-19 public health emergency, the State of Connecticut has canceled all Rabies Clinics held by cities and towns. As such, the annual Rabies Clinic event at Norwalk Animal Control Shelter on June 7 has been canceled. Additionally, the Animal Control Shelter is currently closed and will not be issuing dog licenses at this time.
