Emergency Alert
Code Red Program
The City of Norwalk uses the Code Red Notification service for emergency alerts. This service allows authorized civic leaders (Mayor's Office, Fire, Police, DPW) to create and rapidly disseminate time-sensitive messages to every telephone number stored in the notification database. With the Code Red service, authorized users can send thousands of messages in minutes. Only authorized officials are allowed access to the system. While we will use the system for emergencies, the City may also use the system for community notifications that may impact a number of residents.
How does the service work?
Authorized officials record a voice message that is then delivered quickly to individual phones in the notification database. Messages regarding the safety or welfare of our community would be disseminated using the Notify Norwalk service. Examples would include:
- Hazardous traffic or road conditions inside the city or affecting local routes
- Severe weather warnings and updates
- Situations that could impact the safety, property, or welfare of our citizen
Add Your Contact Information
The Code Red notification service uses publicly available data (white pages) to develop the database. Residents can also add mobile phone numbers to receive calls or text messages as well as emails. If you have an unlisted number or use Voip, you will not be in the database to receive calls unless you opt in.
The Office of Emergency Management urges all residents to register additional phone numbers and email addresses on our Notify Norwalk System. This will allow the city to contact residents by multiple means even after the loss of electricity. Registering the additional phone numbers allows residents to learn of emergencies affecting their home and family even when traveling or at work. This important feature is critical to receive updates especially if you are advised to evacuate. Family members can be notified when emergencies affect a parent's or loved one's home.
To add your contact information to the Notify Norwalk database, please visit CodeRed, a community notification enrollment service provided by the Emergency Communications Network (ECN).
The City's Code Red/Emergency Alert system is different than the system used by the Norwalk Public Schools to notify residents of cancellations and delays. If you do not want to receive those notifications, please contact the Central office and ask to be removed from 'school messenger'.
To Stop Receiving Notifications
To remove your information (phone, text, and email address) from the Code Red Database please complete this on-line opt-out form.
The only way we would have email addresses, text numbers or unlisted phone numbers is if you or someone in your household opted- in and added them to our system.
NEW! If you use an I-phone or Android, you can now download an app to receive notifications when you're on the go. If you're traveling to another town, county or state that subscribes to Code Red, you'll receive any emergency alerts that are issued. Visit: Code Red Mobile to download the free App.
