Commercial Permit Information

Commercial Permits - License and Vehicle Registration(s) expire each year on June 30th.


A valid Commercial Permit - License and Vehicle Registration is required to collect, transport, and/or dispose of solid waste within the City of Norwalk limits in accordance with the City's Ordinance and State Statutes.


If a Commercial Account FAILS TO OBTAIN THE PROPER PERMIT - LICENSE AND VEHICLE REGISTRATION BY JULY 1ST, ACCESS WILL BE DENIED at the Norwalk Transfer Station and/or the Norwalk Yard Waste Site.


In addition, Commercial Vehicles collecting or transporting solid waste within the City of Norwalk will be subject to a $250 per day fine, as outlined in Chapter 94 of the City's Ordinance.

Appointments will be at 15 S. Smith St., Norwalk CT at the Scale Operator Window. 


Permits may take up to 24 hours to complete. 


Regulations


The Chief of Public Works shall be the licensing and registration authority for all solid waste collectors, vehicles, and refuse containers operating within the City of Norwalk.


Applications for licenses, renewals of licenses, and vehicle and/or refuse container registration shall be submitted in writing to the Director of Public Works. Each application must complete to be reviewed, and shall be accompanied by the deposit of the license fee and/or registration fee outlined below.


The annual license and registration fee rate from July 1 to June 30 of any given year or part thereof shall be as follows.


License Fees

License fees shall be in accordance with the tare weight of the vehicle measured at the Norwalk Transfer Station (61 Crescent St, Norwalk CT) and shall be certified by the Weighmaster.


The License Fee shall be based on the largest vehicle registered:

  • Less than 12,000 pounds: $125
  • Greater than 12,000 pounds: $500

Registration Fees

Registration fees shall be in accordance with the tare weight of the vehicle measured at the Norwalk Transfer Station (61 Crescent St, Norwalk CT) and shall be certified by the Weighmaster.


The Registration Fee for each vehicle/container shall be:

  • Less than 5,000 pounds: $125
  • 5,000 to 12,000 pounds: $250
  • More than 12,000 pounds: $750
  • Roll-off containers and compactors: $25

Solid Waste Fees/Recurring Payment 

Commercial Accounts are able to store a credit card on file with the City of Norwalk for payment of every transaction (Solid Waste Fees). Please complete the Recurring Payment Authorization Form.


If Commercial Accounts do not wish to store a credit card on file with the City of Norwalk, they will be required to pay for each transaction at the time of disposal.
