Responsibilities & Unit Details

The department's K-9 Unit is comprised of three teams, with a supervisor overseeing all of their canine operations.

The police service dogs (PSDs) are certified annually with the Connecticut Police Work Dog Association and the North American Police Work Dog Association. All of the department's PSDs are cross-trained for patrol and narcotic detection. The dogs live with and are cared for by their handlers.

Grant funding from the Department of Homeland Security was used to purchase one canine who is trained as an ordinance dog and is trained to detect explosives
