After Filing a Complaint

Complaint Process

Once a complaint is filed, the Fair Rent Commission's staff does a site inspection of the complainant's residence and presents a report to the commission. The general condition of the unit, including issues of poor maintenance, needed repairs, or code violations endangering health and safety are noted.

Mediation

Commission staff work to mediate between the parties. Mediation can be informal telephone or email communication, or can take the form of a more formal in-person mediation session.

Public Hearings

If staff cannot mediate problems between the landlord and tenant, the commission holds a public hearing. In cases where repairs are necessary, repairs may be ordered or rent may be adjusted and/or escrowed until problems are resolved.
