2024 ELECTIONS AND PRIMARIES

2024 PRESIDENTIAL PREFERENCE PRIMARY: APRIL 2, 2024  - DEMOCRATIC PARTY, & REPUBLICAN PARTY
You must be enrolled in one of the two major parties (Democratic or Republican) to vote in that party's primary.
If your are not registered to vote, or are registered, but not affiliated with any party, the last day to register and/or join a major party is March 15, 2024 by mail or on line, and Noon, April 1, 2024, in person only.
If you are registered to vote and already affiliated with any party (Democratic, Republican, Working Families, Independent, etc.) Per state law, the LAST DAY to CHANGE PARTY AFFILIATION so as to vote in the Presidential Primary was January 2, 2024. (It's called a "Preference" primary as you are actually voting for the number of delegates your preferred candidate will get at the party National Convention where the presidential candidate is nominated. The parties have their own rules about how these delegates are chosen.

EARLY VOTING STARTS IN 2024! 4 Days for the Presidential Primary; 7 Days for any other State/Federal Primary, and 14 days for the Presidential Election. This includes weekend days in each case, which should be popular with commuters.

Presidential Preference Primary: Early Voting is on Tuesday March 26, Wednesday March 27, Thursday March 28, and Saturday March 30. (Note: Friday March 29th is "Good Friday" and Sunday March 31 is "Easter Sunday".) Early Voting Times: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. You can register during this time period, but you must register by noon on the business day prior to the day you attempt to vote early. You can also register Monday, April 1st, by noon and vote in person at the polls on April 2nd. 

STATE/FEDERAL PRIMARY, IF NEEDED:

A State/Federal Primary will be held on August 13, 2024 if the party endorsed candidates are challenged. The primary chooses the party nominee for each office and if there is no challenge there is no primary and the endorsed candidate is the nominee of the party. The primary is from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13 and there will be 7 days of early voting. 

Early Voting starts Monday, August 5 and continues to Sunday, August 11th. Time: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, except on Tuesday and Thursday, when early voting will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

2024 PRESIDENTIAL & STATE/FEDERAL ELECTION: NOVEMBER 5, 2024. The election is from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5, and there will be 14 days of early voting. 

Early Voting starts Monday, October 21st and continues to Sunday, November 3rd. Time: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, except on the final Tuesday and Thursday, when early voting will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.


 REGISTRATION: IN PERSON, BY MAIL, OR ON-LINE: 

For the November 5th Election, the last day to register to vote is Friday, October 18, 2024. Mail to the Registrar's Office (Room 103, Norwalk City Hall, Norwalk CT, 06851), or Register In Person by hand-delivery to the Registrars office, the DMV, or voter-registration agency, or register on-line, based on your Connecticut Drivers' License, using the Secretary of the State's website.The Registrars office will be open until 8:00 p.m. on October 18th.

Note: Persons whose rights as to age, citizenship, or residence mature after October 18, may apply to register, in person, up to 5:00 p.m. on November 4, 2024. In addition, see Same Day Registration below.

Also Note: Connecticut law allows for Same Day Registration (SDR) for general elections, so if you have not registered to vote by the general election cut-off dates, it is still possible to come into City Hall on Election Day — November 5 (between 6:00 A.M. and 8:00 P.M.) or during all 14 days of Early Voting and register and vote that day. Persons wishing to do so must prove their identity and their Norwalk residency. This can be done by a single valid I.D., such as a current Connecticut Driver's License, or with documents which prove identity and residence separately, such as an I.D with name and old address (which proves identity), plus a current (with the last 30 days) utility bill or other document proving Norwalk residency  — and vote at City Hall.

Change of Name and/or Address within Norwalk: If you have changed your name from the one on the voter lists, you should fill out a new voter registration card at your polling place before you vote, Please make sure to fill in the part of the form that provides space for your old name. If you have moved within Norwalk (so that your name is on the Official Checklist at your old polling place) you should come to the polling place for your new address. You should fill out a new voter registration card before you vote. Please make sure to fill in the part of the form that provides space for your old address.

There is NO Election Day Registration in any Primary Election. There is NO Election Day Registration at the regular polling places – it is only conducted at City Hall where the election officials have access to the on-line Connecticut Voter Registration System.


 ABSENTEE BALLOTS for the general election will be available from the Town Clerk beginning October 4, 2024.
