In May 2017, the Norwalk Health Department was awarded the Best Place to Live-Work-Play Car-Free award by the Business Council of Fairfield County, thanks to its efforts to promote active transportation through the NorWALKer program. Recipients of this award "offer strong, sustainable commuting options that help to reduce traffic congestion and environmental pollutants; for efforts to attract top talent, increase employee satisfaction and retention by offering transportation programs that add to overall quality of life; and for contributing to vibrant and livable communities."

In September 2017, the Norwalk Health Department presented on the success of the NorWALKer program at the National Walking Summit in St. Paul, MN. Over 600 individuals and organizations from across the country learned how Norwalk revamped its existing walking routes program to promote equitable access to opportunities to engage in physical activity for all residents and visitors of Norwalk.
