Voter ID Requirements
Voters with a valid ID can present it to the Checkers at the polls and then proceed to the Ballot Clerk to get their ballot.
The State of Connecticut has ID requirements which apply in all elections. Certain voters may be required to fulfill a federal (HAVA) ID requirement in state/federal elections. These persons will have an asterisk (*) next to their name on the voter list. This is a one-time requirement, and may be fulfilled upon registering to vote, or the first time the person votes at the polls.
Federal HAVA ID Requirement
Acceptable forms of identification to fulfill this federal HAVA requirement are a current and valid photo ID that shows the elector’s name and address, or a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or government document that shows the name and address of the voter.
Connecticut ID Requirement
Any acceptable HAVA ID satisfies all Connecticut requirements. A current, valid driver’s license or passport makes the best ID. In Connecticut any of the following items also meet the requirements: a Social security card, a pre-printed form if ID showing name and address of the voter, or name and signature of the voter, or name and photograph of the voter.
A Voter, who has shown acceptable identification when registering, or in a previous election, is not required to show identification again. However, if he does not do so, he must step out of line so that he can fill out and sign a Form ED-681 entitled “Signatures of Electors Who Did No Present ID (Form 3) swearing or affirming that the elector whose name appears on the official check list is the elector signing the form.
A person who has not provided acceptable identification, either upon registering, or when voting the first time, is only entitled to a provisional ballot.
